If you take care of it and keep it properly maintained. Assuming it has been properly maintained in the past.

I wonder if there is any actual parts interchangeability between this and the Saab 9000/Fiat Chroma.

It’s like a Saab 9000 Aero with worse parts availability!

If it doesn’t start, can you push it to work? If so, then yes.

Back in the late 80s, I worked at a Chevy dealership as part of their leasing department. We leased all sorts of cars, not just Chevys. There was a red Alfa, not sure which one, but it was similar to this one, that sat out back for the entire 3 months I worked there, waiting on parts. It was still sitting there when I quit, and may still be sitting there now.

I dumped 5-6K a year into my 91 164s and still didn’t have a ‘reliable’ car. the electronics would always find a way to kill the engine. I knew tow drivers by name. I miss it every day.

Those aftermarket wheels look terrible.

I parted ways with mine after 415,000 miles. It never left me stranded, though when the fuel pressure regulator borked it was a bitch to keep running long enough to get it home... and when the cooling fan went south every stop light was an excersize in willing the heat gauge to stay below the red...

Important Things to know before getting a 164-S: CHANGE THE TIMING BELT EVERY 30K MILES OR SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES (luckily it’s not an awful job)

DO NOT PARK IT IN GEAR IN A WAY THAT THE ENGINE CAN BE TURNED BACKWARDS IF IT ROLLS. you WILL skip a tooth on the timing belt and SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES.

Be Prepared to replace the front lower control arm bushings every 50K miles.

Be aware that the STOCK alignment is 2.5 degrees negative front camber and you WILL destroy front tires if you drive it hard.

All US/North America market 164-S had driver’s side airbag, this car has either been in an accident and had it’s wheel replaced with a European wheel, had it’s airbag removed, or is a gray-market import.

I also see this car has had the factory electro-shocks replaced with Konis... it is also possible this isn’t a proper S and is actually a fake S, as L models were available sans-airbag.

The L engine can be S-ified with S heads and cams, but it lacks piston squirters and the integral oil-cooler. the L also lacks the S’s steering damper and has a different rack ratio.

Please note: I kept mine for 415K miles. A good 164-S (some are better than others) is a FANTASTIC car.

Even Alfa mechanics have told me to stay away from these.

parts availability is fine... In Italy. Waiting for the shipping can be a bitch... The 164-S is superior to a 9000 aero in every way, BTW. Including, at least in my experience, reliability.

very very little. The 164 is the most different of the triad. It has unique suspension subframes, different doors, extra chassis bracing, and a host of other changes. Some of the major unibody stampings are the same, but that’s about it. The 164 us the heaviest of the bunch, and of note is ONLY car without side airbags to score "acceptable" in the euroncap side-impact test. When yo open and close the doors on a 164 you understand why.

I just posted something that would be much smarterer for you as a DD, if a bit more gauche.

yeah, it needs better wheels, even the 15” factory speedline dials look better than those. I never had any electrical problems on mine aside from the power seat switches... which were an easy fix, oh, and the ABS pump gave up the ghost, but I just took the warning bulb out of the dash and pretended it never had it.

On the continuing “maybe it’s been in an accident front” it has the euro-spec projector beam headlamps as well, this is a pretty common retro-fit, if I remember correctly the projectors didn’t become available until ‘95, so even if this was a gray import it wouldn’t have had projectors in ‘92... like I said, it’s a pretty common retrofit, but i think see the air-bag sensors in the engine compartment. I’d ask some pointed questions and look at the front frame rails closely... the rest of it DOES look remarkable clean though.

The stock wheels were fantastic! Some of my favorite of all time; for whatever reason they spoke to me.
